Yes, I did! Did you finish? Yep. Are you going to start over? Absolutely! Are you going to start for the first time? n/a Have you ever read the whole Bible? This is the first time, in 2004I started and got almost all the way through. I made it to the mnor prophets and stopped there for some reason. I made through the New Testament in 2004, though. How many times? Once. *************

I am currently reading through the ESV. I should finish by February or March, but I started in late June. I make it a practice to read a different version every year. So far this is about 8-10 years in a row. NIV, CEV, GW, NET, ESV, NEB, NAS, NKJV and others.
If I don't have time to read the best book, than I am spending too much time reading other books. Blessings Marvin |

I am ashamed to admit that I, who have been a Christian for a very, very long time, have never systematically read through the Bible. I've read many parts of the Bible, but I've never been consistent. I intend to change that this year. I'm using the Discipleship Journal plan (it's on the Internet and you can print it out), which gives you 25 readings a month. My husband says that's cheating -- I say it gives me a chance to catch up when I fall behind.
Anyway, maybe telling you folks will help keep me accountable and I'll stick with this plan. And you're right, Marvin, if I don't have time to read the Bible, I'm too busy. |

Quote:Great line, Marvin. I tried to read the Bible in a year when I was a young teacher and got discouraged with the effort. Finally I decided that the way I'm wired means I'll have to take my time, but read it through I would. Since then, reading a portion of Scripture on my way through the Bible is a key component to my quiet time. How many times have I read it? I really have no idea. But no matter how many times it is, I learn something new and have my understanding deepen with every reading. Unlike Marvin, I stick to one translation, but this past year I did decide to read the New Testament backwards, starting with Revelation instead of Matthew. Some years I've read a gospel, then the book of Acts, back to a gospel, then Romans. I'd started doing this because sometimes when I do the 4 gospels together, Jesus's life starts to seem a little ho-hum-ish right around the middle of Luke, something I never want. I just finished the book of John and will start Luke tomorrow. When I finish Matthew, I will start from Genesis once again, but obviously this gives me a late start for 2006 at a pace that is too slow for one year anyway. Becky Rebecca LuElla Miller

I did not read the whole Bible through in 2005. Not even close.
I have read it 4 times in its entirety so far, 3 times using The One Year Bible (NIV twice and NRSV once) and one time using the Daily Walk Bible (NLT). I enjoyed the Daily Walk notes very much. In 2006 I am using the One Year Bible again, keeping the NRSV at work and the NIV at home, reading one or the other each day. Sure it only takes about 15 minutes for me to do a daily reading, yet it's amazing how my own laziness (I'd like to say it's busyness that keeps me at bay, but let's be honest here; it's laziness) can lead me astray. (Hmm, should I spend 15 minutes at the FiF board, or ... ? Be blessed, Randy |

Quote: Amen and Amen!! I try my best to spend more time in His Word than in any other book. I let other things go instead of the Bible. When I get behind in my daily reading, I'll let something go (internet time, my writing time, homeschool time, etc) that's not as important as spending time with God. Without Him, nothing else matters. Re-reading Ecclesiastes really screams that too me. When I get too busy and too run down I drop to my knees and beg him to fix my attitude. Marvin, I want to be just like you when I grow up! I can't wait to say what you did about all the versions you've read and how many times you've read His word!! *************

Reading through different versions is my plan, but there are many plans for reading the Bible. Sometimes I spend a month on a chapter. You can read it in the morning, or in the evening. You can read it in whatever language you prefer. You can listen to it on tape, or watch the new videos that use only Biblical language. you can read paraphrases, Cotton Patch, Message, Living Bible. You can study with notes, commentaries (just don't get too distracted from the actual word.) but like Nike says, "Just do it."

I started reading through the Bible in a year when PG with DS1 and finished it shortly after DS2 was born. Our pastor and others have said a systematic plan will take you places in the Bible you never imagined, which was true.
Right now since the kids are in Bible quizzing that's a lot of my systematic approach. We take about six months to do most of a short book (1 Samuel last year) or part of a big book (Gospel of Matthew this year and next) The Sermon on the Mount was very convicting. Sometimes I dont' think I take God seriously enough until going through that verse by verse and then ysic ann |

I usually read the Bible through once a year, some years twice, one year four times. I try to vary the order I read the books to help keep it fresh. Like this year, I'm reading through the OT books - backwards (just by books, not by chapters or verses or anything headache-inducing: earth. the and heavens the created God beginning the In

yikes, Katie. Twenty times and you're what--twenty-one years old? Or nineteen? Wow! That is so great.
Before kids I used to read five Psalms a day, one chapter in Proverbs, three OT chapters, three gospel chapters, and one NT chapter outside of the gospels. That put me at reading the Psalms, Proverbs, and the gospels every month, the NT twice a year and the OT once a year. I loved that schedule. I'd split the reading--some when I first got up and some when I went to bed. But since I've had kids (12 years) my reading has been terrible. I was so tired those early years and I lost the habit of reading early in the morning and late at night. Then I seemed to read only when I was studying something (for instance when I was preparing for the women's Bible study I led) and I never read just for the pleasure of reading. I'm back on the "just for enjoyment" morning read times but I have no set schedule with it. Sometimes I read one book over and over and sometimes I read large chunks at time. During school time, the kids and I are reading through the "Bible in a year" plan but with weekends and vacations and sick days . . . we're on our third year and we've not yet finished it. Re: Did you read the Bible in a year? Are you going to? | ||
Quote:Now I don't want to say. Ah well, to be honest, I used to systematically read the Bible through once a year--or at least try to, but I did pretty good. These days, I find it hard to be systematic about much of anything. Which means I read in fits and spasms. Honestly, if I had to choose between where I am now as a Christian and where I was back in my systematic days, I'd choose now, but I think that has much to do with God's grace. The trouble is that there are whole books of the Bible I haven't read in years. So I'm going to try (once again) to get through the whole thing in 2006. Maybe I'll make it this time. I found a system. |

I've read the Bible through probably 12 or 15 times in my life. I still like to swallow huges chunks and read a lot at a time, but lately I've been practicing lectio divino, which allows me to concentrate more on the meaning of what I'm reading than getting through a specific amount of chapters.
Some days it's one or two verses and wham, the Holy Spirit says, "this is for YOU. Think about this today, chew on it, apply it, walk it." I read a Psalm each day, then a portion of the Old Testament (I'm currently in Jeremiah) and then a portion of the New Testament. (currently the gospel of John) One of our language learning tasks when I first went to Ecuador was to read the New Testament through in Spanish. I sat with our colicky newborn daughter in my arms and read it aloud to her, verse by verse. Calmed her down, and helped me fulfill a requirement. Lorrie |

I'm going to give it a try this year. I did it a couple of years ago, but this time I'm going to try not to "cheat" by taking an extra month next January to finish.

No, although I made a half-hearted attempt to finish the program I started some time in the '90s... Did you finish? Um, no. Are you going to start over? I'll probably pick up where I left off (again). Have you ever read the whole Bible? No, there are still a few sticky pages at the back of, I think it's called The Old Testament? that I still haven't managed to get to. I'm afraid I've been a bit rubbish at the 'whole Bible' thing, haven't I? Steve |

I have read the Bible in a year. I have read the entire Bible only once (in that year).
I have read the entire Old Testament, minus the law and the begats, two or three times. I have read the enitre New Testament three or four times. I have read the Gospels five or six times. I haven't studied/read the Bible in awhile. I got overloaded, I think. To be honest, I haven't seriously read or studied the Bible in almost four years. I need to get back into it. Perhaps it will seem fresh and new by now. |

I am reading The Message through this year. I try to read a different translation of the Bible through each year. Last year I did the New English Version. Haven't heard about it, than you have not paid enough attention to Bertrand's blog. Really a very good translation. The Message I am indifferent about it as a translation. Excellent in the Psalms, weak in other parts.
I don't know what my life would be like without reading the Bible, and I don't want to find out. blessings, marvin Marvin
